The truth about full-ride scholarships.

Yo -

Here’s a question I get all the time:

Are full-ride scholarships a real thing?

The Answer

Short answer: yes

Longer answer 👇

Yes, but they’re rare.

  1. Full-Ride scholarships are most common in the big sports (football and basketball). You’ll see them in baseball occasionally, and some small percentage exceptions in other sports. For the most part, very few athletes end up on a full-ride athletic scholarship.

  2. More common is a hybrid scholarship — a combination of an athletic scholarship and an academic scholarship. It’s much more common to see a “ hybrid full ride” scholarship. For instance, and athlete may be on a 40% athletic scholarship, and a 60% academic scholarship — totaling a 100% scholarship.

  3. Coaches will often see if you qualify for an academic scholarship. If you do, they can allocate some of your athletic money to other recruits to build out a stronger team. While this may hurt your ego a little, it ultimately doesn’t have a huge impact on your situation.

Work hard in school.

It matters, and it opens up so many more doors.

Stay in school,

P.S. The ultimate goal is to find a school that’s a great fit for you. This is not necessarily always the school that gives you the most amount of money. Trust me on this — fit is significantly more important than prestige. No sense in going to a “prestigious” school only to hate it and transfer later. See you tomorrow.
