Newsletter: Top 3 reasons why HS athletes struggle to earn scholarships

Don't make these mistakes.

Yo -

Top 3 reasons athletes struggle to earn scholarships:

1. Athletes rely on HS coaches to put their name on the map.

Most high school coaches don’t have the contacts they say they do. And even if they do, there are dozens (depending on the sport) of players on a team. Coaches don’t get paid enough and don’t have enough time to fight hard for players to get their name out there. You must market yourself.

2. Athletes don’t send enough outreach messages.

Most athletes don’t send emails, and even the ones that do only send ~15 messages. This is not enough. The recruiting world is as competitive as ever — if you truly want a collegiate athletic scholarship, you should be sending 50-100. It sounds like a lot, but realistically:

3 emails per day x 30 days = 90 messages

When in doubt — send more.

3. Athletes don’t follow up.

When a coach responds to your initial message, the work begins. This is when you should be sending the coach new video regularly so he can see how you develop throughout the course of a season. The more evidence he has that you’re the “right fit” for his team, the more likely you are to land the scholarship.

Don’t make these mistakes.

The recruiting process is 80% effort.

P.S. There are other mistakes athletes make, but if you get these three things right, they won’t matter as much. Get the big things right and the little things don’t matter. See you tomorrow.
